Apple Crisp

Apple Crisp

A classic Apple Crisp featuring tender, cinnamon-spiced apples baked under a buttery, crispy oat crumble. This cozy dessert is quick to prepare, customizable, and perfect for family gatherings or a comforting treat any time of year.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 6 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

Topping

  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour (or almond/oat flour for gluten-free)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed (or vegan butter/coconut oil for vegan)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Wash, peel, core, and slice the apples into even-sized chunks. In a large bowl, toss the apples with granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and flour to evenly coat and help thicken the filling during baking.
  2. Make the Crisp Topping: In a separate bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to mix until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces remaining.
  3. Assemble the Dish: Butter a baking dish and spread the apple mixture evenly on the bottom. Sprinkle the prepared topping evenly over the apples, covering completely but without pressing down.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the assembled crisp for 40-45 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbling.
  5. Cool Slightly and Serve: Allow the Apple Crisp to cool for about 10 minutes before serving to let the filling thicken slightly and avoid burns. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Choose firm, tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for best texture and flavor.
  • Keep the butter cold when mixing the topping to ensure a crispy, flaky texture.
  • Do not overmix the topping; preserving some chunkiness helps maintain crispness.
  • Use a glass or ceramic baking dish for even heat distribution and juicy apples.
  • Let the dessert rest briefly after baking so the juices thicken for better texture.
  • Optionally add chopped nuts or spices like ginger or cloves for customized flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Reheat in the oven to keep topping crisp.
  • Freeze unbaked or baked portions for up to 2 months; thaw before baking or reheating.
