Apple Pie Bombs

Apple Pie Bombs are delightful, bite-sized pastries filled with sweet, spiced apples wrapped in a golden, flaky crust. Perfect for capturing the warm, cozy flavors of autumn, these easy-to-make treats offer a perfect balance of cinnamon, nutmeg, and tart apples, ideal for parties, holidays, or comforting snacks.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 3 medium firm, tart apples (such as Granny Smith), peeled and finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup granulated or brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Crust and Assembly

  • 1 sheet puff pastry or equivalent pie dough (enough to cut 34 inch squares)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Water (for sealing edges, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Filling: Peel and finely chop the apples into small cubes. In a bowl, toss the apples with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and melted butter until evenly coated to enhance sweetness and flavor.
  2. Roll Out the Dough: Lightly flour a clean surface and roll out the puff pastry or pie dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. Cut the dough into equal-sized squares approximately 3 to 4 inches wide, depending on your preferred bite size.
  3. Assemble the Bombs: Place a spoonful of the apple filling in the center of each dough square. Be careful not to overfill to prevent bursting during baking. Brush the edges lightly with water or egg wash to help seal the dough.
  4. Seal and Shape: Fold each square over the filling to form a triangle or rectangle. Press the edges firmly with a fork, creating a decorative crimp to securely seal the bombs.
  5. Add Egg Wash and Bake: Brush the tops of the assembled bombs with the beaten egg wash for a shiny, golden finish. Arrange them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 20 minutes or until they are puffed and golden brown.

Notes

  • Use fresh, firm apples for the best texture and flavor in the filling.
  • Do not overfill the dough squares to avoid leaks during baking.
  • Chill the dough before baking to ensure a crisp, flaky crust.
  • Use egg wash for a beautiful golden shine on the crust.
  • Allow the Apple Pie Bombs to cool slightly before serving to avoid burning the mouth.
