Ingredients

Scale

Cake Ingredients

  • 1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (can substitute gluten-free baking blend with xanthan gum)
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder (use dark cocoa for richer flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs (or flax eggs for vegan version)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk or buttermilk (dairy-free alternatives for vegan)

Frosting Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (or dairy-free alternative)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 23 tablespoons milk (or dairy-free milk)
  • Green food coloring (few drops to desired shade)

Decorations

  • Mini edible stars
  • Silver dragees
  • Colorful sprinkles or candy pearls
  • Optional: edible glitter or crushed candy canes for peppermint touch

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Cupcake Batter: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake tin with paper liners. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and baking soda. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract. Alternately add the dry ingredients and milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients, mixing until smooth and chocolatey batter forms.
  2. Bake the Cupcakes: Spoon the batter evenly into the cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from oven and allow cupcakes to cool completely on a wire rack.
  3. Make the Green Chocolate Frosting: Beat the softened butter with powdered sugar until smooth and fluffy. Add cocoa powder and mix well for rich chocolate flavor. Add green food coloring a few drops at a time, mixing until you achieve a vivid Christmas tree green. Adjust frosting consistency by adding a splash of milk if needed for smooth piping.
  4. Frost the Cupcakes into Christmas Trees: Fit a piping bag with a large star tip. Starting at the base, pipe frosting in a conical swirling motion, building upwards to form a layered Christmas tree shape on each cupcake.
  5. Decorate Your Trees: Embellish each frosted cupcake with mini edible stars, silver dragees, colorful sprinkles, and optional edible glitter or crushed candy canes to resemble holiday ornaments and add festive sparkle.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the batter to keep cupcakes tender and moist.
  • Use room temperature ingredients for better mixing and frosting texture.
  • Practice piping frosting swirls on parchment paper before decorating cupcakes.
  • Chill frosting if it becomes too soft to pipe for easier shaping.
  • Customize decorations to match your holiday colors and themes.
