Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup milk, lukewarm
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Filling Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon

Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Warm the milk until lukewarm and activate the yeast by mixing it with a teaspoon of sugar; let it sit until frothy. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, melted butter, eggs, salt, and the yeast mixture. Mix together to form a soft dough, then knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  2. Let the Dough Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and allow it to rise in a warm, draft-free spot for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  3. Prepare the Filling: Mix softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until combined into a spreadable paste.
  4. Roll and Fill: Roll the dough out onto a floured surface into a 16×12 inch rectangle. Spread the cinnamon sugar butter evenly across the surface. Starting from the longer side, roll the dough tightly into a log and slice into 12 equal pieces.
  5. Second Rise and Bake: Arrange the sliced rolls evenly in a greased baking pan. Cover and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes until puffy. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and fully cooked.
  6. Make the Cream Cheese Frosting: While the rolls bake, beat together softened cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
  7. Frost and Serve: Spread the cream cheese frosting generously over the warm rolls immediately after baking so it melts slightly, enhancing flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Ensure eggs, butter, and cream cheese are at room temperature for better mixing and texture.
  • Knead the dough well to develop gluten for a fluffy, chewy crumb.
  • Proof the dough in a warm, draft-free environment, such as inside an oven with the light on, for optimal rising.
  • Remove rolls from the oven as soon as they are golden and springy to avoid dryness.
  • Apply frosting while rolls are still warm so it melts into the cracks and keeps the rolls moist.
