Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg

Optional Variations

  • Chopped rosemary, thyme, or oregano (for herb infused rolls)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar or parmesan cheese (for cheesy rolls)
  • Half the flour substituted with whole wheat flour (for whole wheat option)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/4 cup raisins (for sweet rolls)
  • Plant-based milk and margarine (for dairy-free swap)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the yeast mixture: Warm the milk to about 110°F (43°C), warm but not hot, then stir in the sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast on top and let it sit for 5 minutes or until foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Mix and knead the dough: In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Add the melted butter, egg, and the yeast-milk mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms, then knead by hand or with a stand mixer for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours until it has doubled in size.
  4. Shape the rolls: Gently punch down the risen dough and divide it into equal portions. Shape each portion into a round ball and arrange them close together in a buttered baking dish to create soft, pull-apart buns.
  5. Second rise: Cover the shaped rolls and let them rise for another 30-40 minutes until they puff up nicely.
  6. Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown on top. Brush immediately with melted butter for a shiny, flavorful crust.

Notes

  • Always test yeast activation in warm milk for a successful rise.
  • Knead dough thoroughly to build gluten and achieve tender texture.
  • Use just enough flour to prevent dryness; avoid overflouring.
  • Be patient with rising times for fluffier rolls.
  • Brushing rolls with butter after baking keeps them soft and adds flavor.
