Ingredients

Scale

Basic Ingredients

  • 6 slices thick-sliced bread (brioche or challah recommended)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk or cream
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp butter (for brushing muffin tin or melting in batter)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread Cups: Cut the bread slices into squares large enough to fit into each cup of a muffin tin. Gently press each square into the cups, forming a small bowl shape to hold the custard mixture.
  2. Mix the Custard: In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk (or cream), cinnamon, vanilla extract, and sugar until smooth and completely combined.
  3. Fill the Cups: Pour the custard evenly into each bread-lined muffin cup, ensuring the custard soaks into all corners of the bread cups without overflowing.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Bake the filled muffin tin at 350°F (175°C) for 20-25 minutes, until the custard is set and the tops are golden brown.
  5. Cool and Serve: Allow the French Toast Cups to cool in the tin for a few minutes to firm up, then carefully remove. Serve warm with your choice of toppings such as fresh berries, powdered sugar, maple syrup, or whipped cream.

Notes

  • Use dense breads like brioche or challah to avoid soggy cups.
  • Do not overfill the bread cups to prevent custard overflow.
  • Lightly butter the muffin tin before pressing in bread for easier removal and richer flavor.
  • Allow the bread to soak in custard a few minutes before baking for deeper flavor.
  • Check doneness by inserting a toothpick; it should come out clean.
