Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm water (around 110°F / 43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons softened butter

Topping Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons softened butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, freshly minced
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg (optional, for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Activate the yeast by mixing it with warm water and a pinch of sugar. Wait until the mixture is bubbly and fragrant. In a large bowl, combine the yeast mixture with flour, remaining sugar, salt, and softened butter. Mix and knead until you form a smooth, elastic dough that is soft but not sticky.
  2. First Rise: Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and place it in a warm spot. Let it rise until it doubles in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours. This step is crucial to ensure the buns turn out fluffy.
  3. Shape the Buns: Gently punch down the risen dough, then divide it into equal portions. Roll each portion into a smooth ball. Arrange the dough balls on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving enough space between each for expansion.
  4. Prepare Garlic Butter and Parmesan Topping: Mix softened butter with freshly minced garlic. Brush this garlic butter generously over each shaped bun, then sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese evenly on top for a rich, flavorful crust.
  5. Second Rise: Allow the shaped buns to rise again for 30-45 minutes until puffed and airy, which enhances their softness.
  6. Bake to Golden Perfection: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Optionally, brush the buns with beaten egg to achieve a shiny golden finish. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the buns turn golden brown and the Parmesan topping crisps lightly.
  7. Cool and Serve: Take the buns out of the oven and let them cool slightly before serving to maintain their shape and flavor.

Notes

  • Use freshly minced garlic, not powder, for the best flavor.
  • Allow both rises as skipping them will affect the buns’ fluffiness.
  • Use room temperature and softened butter for optimum dough consistency.
  • Use freshly grated Parmesan for superior melting and flavor.
  • For extra shine and aroma, brush melted garlic butter on the buns immediately after baking.
