Ingredients

Scale

Pasta

  • Lasagna noodles (no-boil or regular)

Meat Sauce

  • 1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh oregano, chopped
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Cheese Layer

  • 1 ½ cups ricotta cheese
  • 1 handful grated Parmesan cheese (approx. ½ cup)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Garnishes (optional)

  • Fresh chopped parsley or basil
  • Extra virgin olive oil drizzle
  • Red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meat Sauce: Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Sauté diced onion and minced garlic until fragrant. Add ground beef or Italian sausage and cook until browned. Pour in tomato sauce, then add chopped fresh basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Let the sauce simmer gently to develop rich flavors.
  2. Cook the Noodles: If using regular lasagna noodles, cook them in boiling salted water until just under al dente. Drain and lay flat to prevent sticking. If using no-boil noodles, skip this step and use them directly from the package.
  3. Mix the Cheese Layer: In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, grated Parmesan, and an egg. Stir until smooth and creamy to create a luscious cheese mixture.
  4. Assemble the Lasagna: Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in a baking dish to prevent sticking. Layer noodles, followed by the ricotta mixture, then shredded mozzarella. Repeat these layers until all ingredients are used. Finish with a generous sprinkle of mozzarella and Parmesan on top.
  5. Bake to Perfection: Cover the dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 30-35 minutes. Remove the foil during the last 10 minutes to let the cheese brown nicely. Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before serving to set the layers.

Notes

  • Choose fresh mozzarella for better melting and creaminess.
  • Undercook regular noodles slightly to avoid mushy texture after baking.
  • Ensure even layering for perfect bites every time.
  • Allow lasagna to rest after baking to slice neatly.
  • Use fresh basil and oregano for superior flavor compared to dried herbs.
