Mashed Sweet Potatoes

A warm and comforting mashed sweet potatoes recipe that is creamy, slightly sweet, and velvety in texture. Made with simple pantry ingredients, this side dish is nutritious, versatile, and easy to prepare, perfect for family dinners or solo meals.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 pounds fresh sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 4 tablespoons butter (salted or unsalted), melted
  • 1/3 cup warm milk or cream (dairy or plant-based)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

Optional Variations

  • 2 cloves roasted garlic (for garlic infusion)
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup (for maple drizzle)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil (as a vegan butter substitute)
  • 1/3 cup almond or oat milk (for vegan milk option)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme or rosemary (herb blend)
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper or smoked paprika (for spicy kick)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes: Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into evenly sized chunks to ensure uniform cooking, which helps achieve a smooth, lump-free mash.
  2. Boil Until Tender: Place the sweet potato pieces in a large pot of cold water, bring to a boil, and cook until fork-tender, about 15 to 20 minutes. Avoid overcooking to preserve the best texture.
  3. Drain and Dry: Drain the potatoes well and return them to the warm pot. Let them steam dry for 1-2 minutes to remove excess moisture and prevent watery mash.
  4. Mash with Butter and Milk: Add melted butter and warm milk or cream to the potatoes. Mash with a potato masher or hand mixer until creamy. Adjust the milk quantity to achieve your preferred consistency.
  5. Season and Serve: Stir in salt and optional spices such as cinnamon to taste. Mix well, taste, and adjust seasoning before serving. Optionally, add any variations like roasted garlic, maple syrup, herbs, or a spicy kick.

Notes

  • Choose fresh, firm sweet potatoes without cracks or sprouts for best flavor and texture.
  • Use warm milk and melted butter to maintain creaminess and prevent cooling during mashing.
  • Mash gently to keep the texture light and fluffy, avoiding a gummy or gluey result.
  • For a rustic texture, leave the peeled skins on after thoroughly scrubbing the sweet potatoes.
  • Add sweeteners or spices after mashing to preserve the natural sweetness and flavor balance.
