Philly Cheesesteak

Philly Cheesesteak

This authentic Philly Cheesesteak recipe delivers a classic American sandwich experience with thinly sliced ribeye steak, caramelized onions, and melted cheese served in a soft hoagie roll. Easy to prepare and customizable, it’s perfect for a quick, hearty meal that satisfies cravings for savory, melty, and comforting flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef and Vegetables

  • 8 oz thinly sliced ribeye steak (chilled for easier slicing)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • Optional: ½ cup sliced green peppers or mushrooms

Cheese

  • 4 slices provolone cheese or ½ cup Cheese Whiz

Bread and Cooking Essentials

  • 2 soft hoagie rolls
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil (for sautéing)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Steak: Chill ribeye steak in the freezer for about 30 minutes to make thin slicing easier. Once slightly frozen, slice it thinly and season lightly with salt and pepper.
  2. Caramelize the Onions: Heat butter or oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until they turn golden brown and sweet, about 10-15 minutes. Add optional green peppers or mushrooms if desired.
  3. Cook the Steak: Push the caramelized onions to the side of the pan. Add the thinly sliced steak in batches and cook quickly over high heat until just browned, preserving tenderness and juiciness.
  4. Combine and Melt the Cheese: Mix the cooked onions and steak together in the pan. Layer your choice of cheese (provolone slices or Cheese Whiz) on top, cover the pan briefly, and let the cheese melt perfectly over the meat and onions.
  5. Assemble the Sandwich: Slice hoagie rolls open lengthwise without cutting all the way through. Fill generously with the cheesy steak and onion mixture. Serve warm and enjoy.

Notes

  • Freeze the steak slightly before slicing to achieve thin, paper-thin pieces essential for authentic texture.
  • Caramelize onions slowly over medium to medium-low heat to maximize sweetness and flavor balance.
  • Use a hot pan to sear the steak quickly, preserving its juiciness.
  • Cover the pan after adding cheese to trap heat and melt evenly.
  • Choose soft yet sturdy hoagie rolls that absorb flavors but won’t fall apart under the juicy filling.
