Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

This Easy Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy recipe features tender, savory beef patties smothered in a rich and creamy mushroom gravy. Perfect for a comforting weeknight dinner or cozy family meal, it delivers hearty flavors with minimal prep time and simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 1 lb fresh lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the Mushroom Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 8 oz fresh sliced mushrooms
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix just until combined to avoid tough patties. Shape the mixture into evenly sized oval patties for consistent cooking.
  2. Brown the Patties: Heat a large skillet over medium heat with a bit of oil. Add the patties and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until nicely browned but not fully cooked through. Remove patties from the skillet and set aside, leaving the browned bits in the pan.
  3. Sauté Mushrooms and Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, add butter and sliced mushrooms. Cook until mushrooms are tender and golden, about 5 minutes. Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and stir constantly to form a roux. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, bringing the mixture to a simmer until it thickens into a creamy gravy.
  4. Simmer Patties in Gravy: Return the browned patties to the skillet, spoon some gravy over them, cover, and reduce heat. Let everything simmer gently for 10-15 minutes to allow the patties to cook through and soak up the delicious flavors.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Once the patties are tender and the gravy has thickened, taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Plate the Salisbury Steak hot, spooning extra sauce over the top for a comforting meal.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the meat mixture to keep patties tender and juicy.
  • Use fresh mushrooms for the best gravy flavor, avoiding canned or dried.
  • Brown patties well to develop deep flavor and texture.
  • Simmer patties gently in gravy to keep them moist and fully cooked.
  • If the gravy is too thick, thin it with broth or milk; if too thin, cook uncovered to reduce.
