For the Patties
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
- 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Gravy
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1/2 cup diced onion
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, finely chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands or a spoon until just combined to keep the patties tender. Shape the mixture into 4 to 6 oval-shaped patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
- Brown the Patties: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and melt a tablespoon of butter. Add the patties and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side until nicely browned but not fully cooked through. Remove the patties from the pan and set aside.
- Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and diced onions, sautéing until softened and caramelized. Sprinkle in the flour and stir well to form a roux that thickens quickly. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, letting it simmer until the gravy is rich, smooth, and thickened.
- Simmer Patties in Gravy: Return the browned patties to the skillet, spooning gravy over each one. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes until patties are cooked through and flavors meld beautifully.
- Serve: Plate the Salisbury Steak smothered in mushroom gravy, ready to enjoy with your favorite sides.
Notes
- Don’t overmix the meat to keep patties tender and juicy.
- Brown patties well for deep flavor and appealing texture.
- Sauté mushrooms and onions thoroughly to build a rich gravy.
- Use good quality beef broth to enhance savory depth.
- Simmer low and slow to ensure patties stay juicy and gravy thickens nicely.
