Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Gravy

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, finely chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands or a spoon until just combined to keep the patties tender. Shape the mixture into 4 to 6 oval-shaped patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
  2. Brown the Patties: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and melt a tablespoon of butter. Add the patties and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side until nicely browned but not fully cooked through. Remove the patties from the pan and set aside.
  3. Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and diced onions, sautéing until softened and caramelized. Sprinkle in the flour and stir well to form a roux that thickens quickly. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, letting it simmer until the gravy is rich, smooth, and thickened.
  4. Simmer Patties in Gravy: Return the browned patties to the skillet, spooning gravy over each one. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes until patties are cooked through and flavors meld beautifully.
  5. Serve: Plate the Salisbury Steak smothered in mushroom gravy, ready to enjoy with your favorite sides.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the meat to keep patties tender and juicy.
  • Brown patties well for deep flavor and appealing texture.
  • Sauté mushrooms and onions thoroughly to build a rich gravy.
  • Use good quality beef broth to enhance savory depth.
  • Simmer low and slow to ensure patties stay juicy and gravy thickens nicely.
