Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 package pie crust or puff pastry dough (store-bought or homemade)

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon water

Cheese

  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar, mozzarella, or preferred melty cheese

Protein Fillings

  • 4 ounces cooked bacon, sausage, ham, or tofu (finely chopped)

Vegetables

  • 1 cup sautéed spinach, mushrooms, bell peppers, or caramelized onions (well drained)

Seasonings

  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon fresh or dried thyme or rosemary (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Roll out your pie crust or puff pastry dough on a lightly floured surface into a rectangular shape about 1/8-inch thick. Cut into equally sized rectangles, roughly 4×5 inches each, to form the base for your pop tarts.
  2. Make the Filling: Cook your choice of protein until fully done and chop finely. Sauté any vegetables until tender and moisture has evaporated to avoid soggy crusts. Combine protein, veggies, cheese, and seasonings in a bowl.
  3. Fill the Pop Tarts: Place a generous spoonful of filling in the center of half the dough rectangles, leaving a border around the edges. Brush the edges with egg wash to help seal.
  4. Seal and Crimp: Lay the remaining dough rectangles over the filled ones, pressing around the edges to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges for a classic pop tart finish and create small vent holes on top to release steam while baking.
  5. Apply Egg Wash and Bake: Brush the tops of the pop tarts with egg wash for a golden, shiny crust. Place them on a lined baking sheet and bake in a preheated 375°F (190°C) oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until beautifully golden and puffed.

Notes

  • Drain fillings thoroughly to prevent soggy crusts.
  • Preheat the oven properly for a crisp, flaky crust.
  • Don’t overfill pop tarts to ensure proper sealing and avoid leaks.
  • Use an egg wash generously to achieve a golden and crunchy crust.
  • Vent the tops by poking small holes so steam can escape during baking.
