Hash brown lasagne

Hash brown lasagne

Hash brown lasagne is a cozy, crispy, and cheesy layered dish that combines golden hash browns with rich cheeses, savory meat sauce, and flavorful herbs. This versatile comfort food replaces traditional pasta with crispy potatoes, making it an easy-to-make, satisfying meal perfect for family dinners or meal prepping.

Ingredients

Scale

Base

  • 4 cups frozen hash browns, thawed

Cheese Blend

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Meat and Sauce

  • 1 lb ground beef (or chicken/turkey)
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Herbs and Extras

  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • Optional veggies: 1/2 cup chopped bell peppers, mushrooms, or spinach

Instructions

  1. Prepare the meat and sauce: In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground meat with chopped onions and minced garlic until fully cooked and fragrant. Add the tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper, then simmer uncovered for 10 minutes to blend the flavors well.
  2. Layer the hash browns: Grease a baking dish well. Spread a thin, even layer of thawed frozen hash browns in the dish, pressing lightly to help them stick together and form a solid base.
  3. Add sauce and cheese: Spoon a generous layer of the meat sauce over the hash browns, then sprinkle with a portion of the mozzarella and cheddar cheese blend. Repeat layering the hash browns, sauce, and cheese until ingredients are used, ending with a cheese layer on top.
  4. Bake to perfection: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes to allow the cheese to bubble and the hash browns on top to become crispy.
  5. Rest before serving: Remove the dish from the oven and let it cool and set for 10 minutes to make slicing easier. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley or basil if desired, then serve.

Notes

  • Use thawed hash browns to avoid excess moisture and ensure crispier layers.
  • Press hash browns firmly when layering to help them bind during baking.
  • Allow the lasagne to rest after baking so the layers settle and slice nicely.
  • Customize cheese blends by mixing different types to balance meltiness and flavor.
  • Use a non-stick or well-greased baking dish to prevent sticking and aid in serving.
