Savory Cheese Croissant

Savory cheese croissants combine buttery, flaky pastry with rich, melted cheese for a versatile and easy-to-make treat. Perfect for breakfast, snacks, or entertaining guests, these croissants offer a crispy, tender bite that can be customized with various cheeses and fillings. Using store-bought or homemade dough speeds up preparation, making this recipe accessible for all skill levels.

Ingredients

Scale

Croissant Dough

  • Store-bought or homemade croissant dough (enough for desired number of croissants)

Cheese

  • Sharp cheddar, Gruyere, or mozzarella cheese, sliced or shredded (about 1/4 cup per croissant)

Butter

  • Butter, for brushing the croissants (about 1-2 tablespoons)

Herbs (Optional)

  • Fresh thyme, rosemary, or chives, finely chopped (1-2 teaspoons)

Egg Wash

  • 1 beaten egg, for brushing the croissants before baking

Optional Additional Fillings

  • Thin slices of ham
  • Sautéed spinach
  • Crumbled feta cheese
  • Diced jalapeño peppers
  • Sautéed mushrooms
  • Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: If using store-bought dough, allow it to come to room temperature according to package instructions for easier rolling and shaping. For homemade dough, keep it cold and laminated to ensure flaky layers.
  2. Cut and Fill: Roll out the dough and cut into triangles. Place a generous amount of your chosen cheese and any additional fillings near the wide base of each triangle, being careful not to overfill to prevent leaking during baking.
  3. Shape the Croissants: Starting at the wide end, roll each triangle tightly toward the tip to form the classic crescent shape, tucking the tip underneath to keep it from unraveling while baking.
  4. Apply Egg Wash: Brush each croissant lightly with the beaten egg to achieve a shiny, golden-brown finish once baked.
  5. Bake: Arrange croissants on a parchment-lined baking sheet with space in between. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and puffed. Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Keep dough chilled to maintain flaky layers and prevent premature butter melting.
  • Do not overfill croissants to avoid leakage and sogginess during baking.
  • Use sharp cheeses like aged cheddar or Gruyere for deeper flavor.
  • Rotate baking tray halfway through baking for even browning.
  • Serve croissants warm to fully enjoy melty cheese and crisp layers.
