Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 68 fresh tomatillos, husked and rinsed
  • 1 ripe avocado, peeled and pitted
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves
  • 1 jalapeño or serrano pepper, seeded if preferred
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • Juice of 1 lime (about 2 tablespoons)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tomatillos: Husk and rinse the tomatillos thoroughly to remove any sticky residue. Roughly chop them into pieces to make blending easier.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a blender or food processor, add the chopped tomatillos, peeled avocado, fresh cilantro, jalapeño (seeded if less heat is desired), minced garlic, and freshly squeezed lime juice.
  3. Blend Until Smooth: Pulse the ingredients until blended but still slightly chunky, aiming for a texture that nicely coats chips or dishes.
  4. Season to Taste: Gradually add salt and black pepper, tasting as you go, to perfectly balance the salsa without overpowering its freshness.
  5. Chill and Serve: Transfer the salsa to a bowl and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and intensify before serving.

Notes

  • Use ripe avocados that are slightly soft for the creamiest texture.
  • Prepare the salsa shortly before serving to maintain vibrant color and fresh flavors.
  • Add lime juice gradually to avoid overpowering the smoothness of avocado.
  • Serve chilled or at room temperature for the best refreshing taste.
  • Leave some small chunks in the salsa for better texture and visual appeal.
  • To add extra heat, increase jalapeño or add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • Roast tomatillos before blending for a smoky flavor variation.
  • Add diced red or green onion for crunch and sharpness.
  • Mix in queso fresco or sour cream for a creamier version.
  • Add diced mango or pineapple for a tropical sweetness contrast.
